Matthew Matsuoka

My paintings are a meditation on time, memory and nature. I choose to paint in successive layers, letting elements disappear and return during the art making process. I use subjects from nature that that are fleeting and have less permanence in the world: insects, birds, plants and microscopic life. These elements can become players in a seeming narrative, or represent compositional objects that signify loss, change and regeneration. I paint both positive and negative renderings in successive layers to suggest what is hidden but not seen, and what is remembered but not present. The result creates a physicality that is full of life and is as much about the negotiation with paint as it is about nature.
